Denton County officials approved the allocation of additional funding toward the FM 407 breakout project near the border of Argyle and Northlake.

Commissioners unanimously approved supplemental agreement No. 2 to a professional services agreement with Bartlett & West Inc., worth around $1.68 million, during the Oct. 14 meeting. The additional funding adds to the previously approved $1.35 million for a total funding of nearly $3.03 million.

The details

Funding for the project will be vectored toward a portion of the breakout project near the intersection at FM 407 and I-35W, according to county documents. The increased funding will help cover an extension of the western project limit, revising the project’s design sheets and pulling out the design sheets for a micro-breakout project to alleviate congestion at the I-35W and FM 407 intersection, which will be let separately from the entire project.

The entire FM 407 breakout project will take place between Cleveland-Gibbs Road in Northlake and Gateway Drive in Argyle. The $3.03 million in the contract for engineering services is funded through the Denton County Trip-22 bond program.

Within the scope of the micro breakout project, work will include:
  • Adding travel lanes on FM 407 under the existing I-35W bridge, one each for the eastbound and westbound directions
  • Adding a southbound right-turn lane onto westbound FM 407
  • Adding a northbound right-turn lane onto eastbound FM 407
“This is going to be a major improvement over there at 407,” County Judge Andy Eads said. “We’ve been working on this for quite some time. The county has taken a leadership role on this project.”

Looking ahead

Final plans for the FM 407 breakout project are expected to be completed in November.

While no start of construction date has been identified for the full breakout project, the micro breakout project is planned to be under construction starting in January 2026.
