Library officials recognized the students and gave them the opportunity to share details about their work, which represents different landscapes across Texas.
The details
The students worked on their paintings throughout the summer, said Director of Library Services Rachel Hadidi. All five students chose a different Texas-themed landscape, including:
- Gael Giovani Guardado’s Piney Woods-inspired mural
- Noah Kang’s Gulf Coast-inspired mural
- Rhianna Patel’s lake-inspired mural
- Soun Reddy’s Panhandle plains-inspired mural
- Abbie Sweatt’s Big Bend Country-inspired mural
“I really love art, and this was a way to bring it into the community,” she said.
What they’re saying
Mayor Cheryl Moore said bringing in the artists to paint murals was a good addition to the library.
“Adding things like new and interesting art incorporates what we're all about with the cultural arts here in the community,” Moore said.
Hadidi added that with the library’s visitors, it adds exposure for the artists and also creates a place where the public can come view art.
“We don't have an art center,” Hadidi said. “You can't go anywhere to just see art, and so you come and see it in the library.”
What’s next
In the future, Hadidi said library staff may try to expand the opportunity for Marcus High School students to paint the remainder of the study rooms.
