Similar to other park projects, Flower Mound officials will apply to receive grant funding for the Leonard and Helen Johns Community Park project.

Council members approved a resolution to apply for a grant worth up to $750,000 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department during the July 7 meeting.

The overview

Town staff will now be required to submit an application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The application must be approved before funding can be used to pay for the construction of proposed improvements at the park.

The state grant provides a 50% match for local funding up to $750,000 for the acquisition, development and renovation of public recreation areas and facilities, according to town documents. A term of receiving the grant requires the town to operate and maintain projects for the intended purpose for at least 25 years.

Some context

Council approved a master plan for Leonard and Helen Johns Community Park in May.

Flower Mound also applied for a state grant for its proposed improvements at Trotter Park and Peters Colony Memorial Park. In January, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department announced the town received a $750,000 grant for Trotter Park.

Looking ahead

Recommendations to award the grant funds are expected to be released between early and mid-2026, per town documents.
