Argyle will see a badminton and pickleball facility along FM 407 after the special use permit was approved at the June 16 town council meeting.

The overview

Argyle Sports Academy will be located along FM 407 and accessed by Avalon Boulevard, Hampshire Drive and Gateway Boulevard. It will be constructed on a 2.35-acre lot within Argyle Landing, a community of 198 single-family homes currently being developed.

The sports facility is planned to be constructed in two phases. Phase one would have 24,000 square feet and include 14 pickleball and badminton courts. Phase two would add 9,600 square feet to the building and six additional courts to accommodate a total of 20 badminton and pickleball courts. The facility will also include a pro shop.

Argyle Sports Academy will be similar to Frisco Badminton Academy, Principal CEO of the Frisco Badminton Academy, Karri Reddy said. There are also three badminton academies in the Austin area, marking Argyle as the company’s fifth location for the badminton training facility.

“We primarily focus on teaching kids,” Reddy said. “We have 15 full-time coaches serving all locations and we [had] the first badminton olympic medal [winner] in the United States.”

Miles Krajewski and Jayci Simon, who trained at the Frisco Badminton Academy, won a silver medal for the 2024 paralympics in Paris, Reddy said. USA Badminton, the governing body of badminton in the United States, proclaimed Frisco Badminton Academy a high performance paralympic national training center, he added.

“Our goal is to build a similar team and training center in Argyle as well,” Reddy said.

The facility will also bring sales tax to the town through membership fees and pro shop sales, Reddy said.

Zooming in

Town council approved the academy with the same conditions that were recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission at the June 4 meeting. The conditions included:
  • Requiring the east side exterior wall to have glass, native stone, clay-fired brick or tile until phase two of construction breaks down this wall to extend the facility
  • Prohibiting outdoor courts
  • Requiring the diameter of the street trees’ trunks to be 4-inches
  • Stipulating that more trees be planted or pay the equivalent amount for trees not planted to the Argyle tree reforestation fund
Looking ahead

Argyle Sports Academy will start construction after the infrastructure and roads leading to the development are built, Marisa Brewer from McAdams, the design and engineering firm working on the project, said. This is anticipated to be completed in March 2026.

Once started, construction is expected to take nine months to complete, Reddy said.
