Highland Village officials are planning to build a new basketball court at Unity Park.

Council approved the project at an estimated cost of $197,750 and DHC Concrete Construction and Restoration as the project contractor. The project will use 2022 bond funds.

Brian Norton, Deputy Director of Parks Operations and Projects, presented the project at the April 8 meeting.

What to know

The city is planning to build the court toward the back of Unity Park behind the baseball fields in between the water tower and parking lot, according to city documents.

This project will include the concrete foundation, a five-foot sidewalk connecting the court to the parking lot, the installation of four basketball goals, and the surfacing of the court with lines and colors. The length of the court will be 62 feet by 106 feet, which is around 75% of a regulation basketball court, Norton said.

The majority of the cost for the project will be spent on earthwork and concrete at $41,053 and $95,792, respectively. After running a soils report for the area, engineers recommended steel grade beams will need to be implemented throughout the concrete slab to ensure rigidity in the structure if the soil moves. It will also help prevent sinking, cracking and degradation throughout consistent use, Norton said.

Also of note

The cost of the project does not include lighting, which officials said will be brought back at a future meeting after bids for that portion conclude. Officials estimate the cost for lighting at $30,000, which puts the total project within the $230,000 budget.

If the lighting comes in over budget, the city may elect to build the court without lighting fixtures, Norton said.
