First responders will be to access a road near a school site after a March 18 decision by Argyle Town Council.

Council revisited a special-use permit concerning Argyle ISD property along FM 407, amending it to allow a gated emergency access for first responders via Postmaster Road. The vote also included allowing AISD officials the option to access Sam Davis Road for westbound traffic only, if they choose. Sam Davis Road is a cross street of Postmaster Road.

The details

Council heard from Argyle ISD Superintendent Courtney Carpenter, who said the district agrees with the town administration’s recommendation for emergency vehicles to use Postmaster Road to access the district's campuses. The district is adding a middle school to this area, located in the south part of Argyle. District officials will eventually build an elementary school near the middle school.

The background

In January, council approved a specific-use permit for the district’s property, which is located on FM 407 near The Well Community Church, and prohibited access to the property from Postmaster Road and Sam Davis Road, according to a town news release.

In February, council voted on a specific-use permit for a proposed middle school to be located on the north side of FM 407. Council decided to allow secondary emergency-only access utilizing a locked gate.

What they’re saying

“I would just like to thank the parties involved for sitting down and trying to work together and a find a way to work through this situation,” council member Cynthia Hermann said March 18. “I just didn’t feel great about January’s meeting and where kind of things ended up. I feel that everybody has the same interests at heart, and so I appreciate everyone who has sat down and has tried to come up with ways to make this work for everybody.”
