People may now register for Dorothy's Dash 2023, to be held Nov. 11 at Bakersfield Park, 1201 Duncan Lane, Flower Mound.

The details

The annual event includes a Kids K and 5K Run/Walk in honor of former town employee Dorothy Walkup. Proceeds from this event benefit the Texas Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The Kids K begins at 8 a.m., and the 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:30 a.m. After the events, participants may enjoy music, refreshments and awards.

The backstory

In November 2004, Walkup, a former track and field participant, lost her battle with multiple sclerosis, and town officials found a way to recognize her through this event. She was considered a “friend, mentor and shoulder to lean on to all who had the good fortune of knowing her,” the website states. “Her strength and courage were never more evident than during her seven-year fight against MS. The town of Flower Mound is sponsoring Dorothy's Dash to honor her memory, share her example with others who may suffer this terrible disease and to raise funds to combat multiple sclerosis.”

The event began in 2004. During her time with the town, Walkup worked as an executive secretary, executive assistant to the town manager and customer relations manager, according to Melissa Demmitt, communications director with the town. Dorothy's Dash attracts 600-800 people a year, Demmitt said.
