June 17: Juneteenth 4K Freedom Walk & FestivalHead over to Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and participate in a 4K walk followed by a festival with entertainment for the whole family, shopping, and a special unveiling and dedication ceremony of a mural on the center’s wall. There will also be a dedication ceremony of a replica of Southern Methodist University’s historical marker commemorating King’s visit to Dallas in 1966.

Fort Worth
June 15: Watch a live Juneteenth programThe city of Fort Worth’s Diversity and Inclusion Employee Committee will host a Juneteenth program that will be broadcast live on the city’s YouTube channel and on Fort Worth Television. The program will include a presentation on the history of the Port Sullivan Plantation Home, readings of monologues and poetry by Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, and more. The program will be available to watch on demand 24 hours after the live broadcast ends.

Participate in Opal’s Walk for Freedom in Fort Worth, which will be covered live on NBC 5 and other affiliates around the country. The 2.5 mile-long walk recognizes the 2 1/2 years it took for the news of freedom to reach Texas. Fort Worth’s own Opal Lee is an activist who helped make Juneteenth a nationally recognized holiday by walking from Texas to Washington, D.C. Those who are unable to participate in Fort Worth can still register to participate virtually from wherever they may be.

In honor of the holiday, the Fort Worth Botanical Garden is offering free admission all day. The 120-acre campus is the oldest major botanic garden in Texas and contains over 2,500 species of plants across 23 gardens.

June 17: Roll with the Soul PatrolGrab a bike and pedal to the Soul Patrol’s annual Juneteenth Bike Rally. Participants can choose from a 10-, 26-, 32- or 56-mile route for their bike ride, all of which will stay within the city. All races will start at the same time and location.

See a screening of “The Last to Know,” a documentary exploring the history of slavery, racial inequality and Juneteenth hosted at On the Marquee. June 17: Come to the Plano African American Museum soft openingHead over to the Plano African American Museum to celebrate Juneteenth and the soft opening of the museum. The museum started with an online collection of exhibitions now being shared in its physical location in the Douglass community.

Visit the Lexus Box Garden at Legacy Hall to celebrate the contributions to fashion from the African-American community. The second annual Juneteenth fashion show will feature several surprise guest appearances and designs from labels such as House of Dasha Boutique, Annia Louisa and more.
