City officials are working to plan safe routes for students to get to McAuliffe Elementary School, Heritage Elementary School and Briarhill Middle School next school year.

The backstory

Lewisville ISD trustees approved the closure of Highland Village Elementary School in December for the 2025-26 school year due to declining enrollment.

“We know a lot of our students in Highland Village and Lewisville will be either going to McAuliffe or Heritage Elementary, and so we wanted to learn how they will be traveling to school to help us plan for safe routes, whether it's a crossing guard needed at a specific location, or better striping, or more information on the trails,” Director of Communications Laurie Mullens said.

The details

Parents with children who will attend these schools are invited to take a short survey to let city officials know how they will travel to school, such as by bus, walking or riding a bike. The survey is open through July 16, Mullens said.

What else?

Mullens said city police will be providing a presentation on school safety at the July 22 council meeting, during the early work session. The presentation will also include results from the survey.
