Collin College officials broke ground on the college's new technical campus Friday.

The new campus, located south of SH 121 between Alma Drive and Exchange Parkway in Allen, will accommodate instruction in high-demand, high-wage workforce areas, according to a news release from Collin College.

The three-story, 340,000-square-foot career and technical education facility will offer programs in automotive service and repair, construction, health care, manufacturing and information technology. The campus will offer night and weekend classes.

The campus and classes were designed with the input of local professionals in each of the program's career fields to prepare students for when they enter their industries, according to the release.

Collin College has an agreement with Allen ISD to allow the district to expand dual credits offered to AISD students and to use classrooms and labs during regular school hours, according to the release.

Collin College also has agreements with McKinney, Frisco and Plano ISDs, who will send students to the campus for dual-credit opportunities.

The technical campus, which is part of the college's master plan, will begin offering classes in fall 2020 and is expected to serve up to 7,100 students when full, according to the release.

"Significant growth is coming to Collin County in the next 10-20 years and beyond," Collin College District President Neil Matkin said in the release. "The Collin College Technical Campus is positioned to provide students with high-quality, low-cost educational options that will prepare them for rewarding careers in the high-demand fields fueling that growth."

Collin College partnered with AISD to fund a portion of the construction along with the Allen Economic Development Corp. for planning and construction of the campus.
