A 12-acre site in McKinney received a favorable rezoning recommendation from the McKinney Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 22.
The request was to rezone 12 acres of land located near Craig Drive and Collin McKinney Parkway for multifamily use.
In 2018, the McKinney Finance Housing Corp. issued a request for qualifications seeking developers to codevelop an affordable housing site for the city. NRP was selected among those responses to the request.
Bob Roeder presented the project at the planning and zoning meeting Oct. 22 on behalf of the NRP group.
"We really don’t have in McKinney much housing stock that a person who is a beginning fireman or beginning policeman or a school teacher or that works in any of our service industries can really afford," he said. "Almost all of that housing stock is out of reach for the service people that we would like to have living in McKinney."
Roeder emphasized the request was specifically to rezone this site for multifamily use and was not a site plan at this time.
"At this point in time, this is very, very preliminary engineering," Roeder said.
Due to the preliminary nature of the request, information regarding how many units would be provided and other amenities was not available.
City staff assured commissioners that the housing units were affordable due to financing from developers and not by cheapened materials or items of that nature.
In addition, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs will provide oversight to the project to ensure it meets standards, city staff said.
The project was approved unanimously by the planning and zoning commission.
The development will be on the McKinney City Council agenda for the Nov. 19 meeting.
