Senior adults and people with disabilities can sign up beginning Monday for a service that hails taxis at a quarter of the cost.
Officials in Allen, Fairview and Wylie are partnering with Dallas Area Rapid Transit to fund and organize the new Collin County Rides program, which offers subsidies of up to $150 per month for personal taxi rides.
The program is intended to fill the void left late last year when Texoma Area Paratransit System ceased offering a similar bus service in Collin County, Allen Assistant City Manager Eric Ellwanger said.
"For us, we have a certain population that was definitely using the service from TAPS," Ellwanger said. "When TAPS went away, our City Council felt that there was a service that was needed in the community for the elderly and disabled."
Users must be at least 65 years old or have a certified disability in order to
enroll with DART online. Once a user is enrolled, DART will provide a reloadable taxi debit card. Users can load up to $50 per month on the card in $5 increments; DART will then contribute three times that total to the debit card balance.
The city of Allen will pay $12,500 during the first year of the program, Ellwanger said. Fairview and Wylie have also contributed to the program. Any extra costs will be paid by DART through a grant.
