The Collin County Commissioners Court on Aug. 18 approved an interlocal agreement with the city of Frisco for the city to take over construction of a portion of Custer Road.

The three-mile portion of the road, between Stonebrook Parkway and SH 121, would be widened from four to six lanes.

The road sits between the Frisco and McKinney city lines. The city of McKinney was originally allocated $2.5 million from the 2007 Bond Fund to make improvements to the road. McKinney officials agreed to transfer those funds to the city of Frisco in order for Frisco to take over the project.

McKinney officials have requested the county reimburse the city the bond funds to use for other projects. The Commissioners Court decided to vote on the request at a future meeting.

The Custer Road construction project is expected to cost more than $8 million. Frisco has already put in more than $1 million to complete engineering on the road and has obtained Texas Department of Transportation Pass-Through Financing for nearly $6 million.

Frisco is close to getting environmental approval for the project and expects to begin construction by next summer, said Tracy Homfeld, Collin County director of Engineering.
