On March 8, State Rep. Tan Parker, R-Flower Mound, announced he is entering the race to succeed retiring House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio. In doing so, he has also decided to resign as chairman of the Texas House Republican Caucus.

"I am ready to continue to serve Texas in a new leadership role bringing a unified effort for the betterment of our members and this great state," Parker said in a news release. "I am also very proud of my record as chair of the Texas House Republican Caucus and the trust my fellow colleagues placed in me over the past three years. During this time, we have focused upon the successes of our members while advancing the Republican principles that have built a stronger Texas. Today, our caucus is seen as one of the most effective, conservative bodies among legislatures in the entire country. Yet, we have much more work ahead, and I am prepared to lead. Together, we will keep Texas the leading state for prosperity, liberty and opportunity."

Currently in his sixth term, Parker represents House District 63, which includes the southwest portion of Denton County. Since taking office, Parker said he has been a champion for economic development, strengthening border security, promoting fiscally responsible government spending, reducing tax burdens, protecting family values and the culture of life, and providing for greater public safety including improving child protection laws. He said he has also worked to make state government more accessible and values the strong involvement of his constituency.

Parker joins state representatives Phil King, R-Weatherford, and John Zerwas, R-Richmond, in vying for the gavel.
