On May 5, Sea Life Grapevine Aquarium opened as the first North Texas aquarium with a hospital permitted to rehabilitate and release injured sea turtles back into the wild.
Pancake was sent to Grapevine to recover from a recent surgery for a contagious disease that causes tumors. The aquarist team taught Pancake how to survive in the wild by learning how to find food and shelter, according to a news release.
Now that she has recovered, Pancake was released back into the Gulf of Mexico in Corpus Christi.
The hospital also expanded the sea turtle exhibit at the aquarium to help guests learn more about what it takes to care for a sea turtle. Guests can view aquarists through a glass window working with some of the injured patients in the aquarium’s new hospital.
