How to keep pets safe as Hurricane Laura approaches

As potentially damaging tropical weather approaches the Gulf Coast, the Humane Society of the United States released disaster plan guidance for pet owners Aug. 25.

Officials recommend individuals identify someone in a safe location who can provide shelter for them and their pets in case evacuation is deemed necessary as emergency shelters and hotels do not always take pets.

Those staying put should identify a safe area of their home and close off unsafe areas where pets may want to hide. Pets should be wearing identification and be leashed or kenneled indoors in the midst of a storm close to emergency supplies, officials said.

Pet owners should have a disaster kit ready including the following essentials:

• enough food and water for at least five days for each pet;
• medications for at least five days and all medical and vaccination records for each pet;
• pets’ collars with identification tags;
• a pet first aid kit;
• a litter box with extra litter;
• sturdy leashes, harnesses and carriers for pet transportation;
• current photos and descriptions of pets;
• comfort items such as pet beds or toys; and
• written information about the pets’ feeding schedules, medical or behavioral issues, and the name and contact information of the pets’ veterinarian.
