To prepare for growth in northwest Conroe caused by incoming residential developments, the city of Conroe plans to soon begin work on its project to widen a portion of Longmire Road. On Dec. 14, Conroe City Council awarded the Longmire Road construction bid to Bryan-based Larry Young Paving construction company for $12.2 million. Conroe Director of Engineering Tommy Woolley said the project will expand roughly three miles of Longmire Road from two to four lanes between FM 3083 and League Line Road. Woolley said the project includes removing the existing asphalt and replacing it with a concrete roadway, along with curb and gutter improvements, and a hike and bike trail. Woolley said the road expansion is intended to improve traffic flow and mobility along the budding corridor. He credited residential developments like The Villas at White Oak and Wedgewood Falls Preserve to this growth. “We’ve had a lot of subdivisions come along this corridor and a lot of apartment complexes,” he said. “The Longmire [Road] area is booming with development.” Construction on Longmire Road is scheduled to begin in late January or early February and last approximately 18 months, Woolley said. The Longmire Road expansion project is part of a larger series of projects to improve mobility in northwest Conroe, Woolley said. In recent years the city of Conroe has partnered with state and regional agencies on a number of projects to improve mobility in the Conroe area. In March 2018 the city celebrated the premiere of the $6.5 million M.P. Clark Road—a four-lane road connecting League Line Road and FM 830. The city also partnered with Conroe ISD on a $1.2 million to improve pedestrian mobility along Longmire for students and residents. The Safe School Access program focused on installing sidewalks and crosswalks along roadways in the corridor.
