Kenneth Newell has filed to run for the 233rd Judicial District judge seat. He is running as a Republican against Lori DeAngelis Griffith in the March 6 primary election.

Community Impact Newspaper sent Newell a list of questions about his candidacy. Below are his answers, which have been edited for publication style.

Q: What is your current occupation?
A: I’m an attorney with the Law Office of Kenneth Newell PLLC.

Q: Why did you decide to run for this office?
A: I’m running out of a sense of service. As a 20-year retired Army soldier, I felt compelled to serve when Judge Harris announced his retirement. After searching my heart and consulting with some trusted advisors, I decided to follow my heart and serve.

Q: What experience—professionally or politically—do you have that would prepare you for this position?
A: I am attorney working in family law and have experience in these matters. As a Bronze Star veteran, I routinely made tough decisions for me and my soldiers in combat, which have prepared me for understanding the gravity of the decisions I will make in this court.

Q: If elected, what would be your top priorities?
A: The best interest of children and making sure every litigant before my court is treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve as citizens of this great county. I will always follow the law and never take myself too seriously.

Q: What else do you want constituents to know about you and your background?
A:  I am the 15th of 16 children and know the importance of family. I have an MBA degree to help me be efficient and fiscally responsible. Ultimately, my desire is to continue my service to the people of Tarrant County.
