Gov. Abbott appoints longtime adviser as interim attorney general

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Texas’ second interim attorney general July 10, six weeks after Ken Paxton’s impeachment.

Angela Colmenero, the governor’s deputy chief of staff, will step into the role July 14. She replaces John Scott, whose departure Abbott announced in a news release.

Scott took over as interim attorney general May 31, four days after the Texas House voted to impeach Paxton for alleged bribery, conspiracy, retaliation against former employees and more. Paxton is suspended from office without pay as he awaits a Sept. 5 impeachment trial in the Senate.

In a statement, Scott explained that he originally took the job “with an understanding that my duration would be limited in time.” He said he would return to his work as a consultant, attorney and board member for various companies.

“John Scott faithfully executed his duties as the interim attorney general of Texas, and I thank him for his leadership in stepping up to serve his fellow Texans in this role,” Abbott said in the release.

Colmenero currently serves as Abbott’s deputy chief of staff, a role he promoted her to in June. According to the release, she has worked for the governor’s office since 2018.

She also worked for Abbott when he was attorney general and held various positions, including chief of general litigation.

“Angela's record of experience in state government and expertise in litigation will help her oversee the Texas attorney general's office and serve as our state’s top law enforcement officer as the Texas Senate conducts impeachment proceedings,” Abbott said.
