Old Town Leander master planning moves forward

On April 21, City Council selected consulting firm Kimley-Horn to complete its Old Town Master Plan that will direct developing and revitalizing the district.

The city initially budgeted $75,000 for the work, but Kimley-Horn's proposal was $130,000. Council also approved amending the budget to accommodate the entire scope of the proposal for $130,000 in the current budget year.

Kimley-Horn will assist the city with stakeholder engagement, analysis of the city, mapping and visioning.

Planning for Old Town will fulfill the city's recognition of the opportunity to promote and revitalize its historic town center, according to city documents. The vision could incorporate resident feedback on the future of Old Town as a "funky, artsy, pedestrian-scaled, historic hot spot, restaurant destination, organic, small businesses, charming, welcoming and a community gathering place."

In 2021, council approved a zoning change that will allow for more restaurants and entertainment to come to Old Town Leander. Zoning at 203, 208 and 210 N. Brushy St. is now an urban center zone and transect zone, which is used for higher-density mixed-use development.

Earlier in 2021, council approved a $1.2 million concept plan for the nearby Old Town Park that will feature the city's history, offer seating areas and serve as an event venue.
