Leander City Council approves $197,054 in police department upgrades

Leander City Council approved two purchases totaling $197,054 for Leander Police Department upgrades at its Feb. 2 meeting.

The first purchase—in the amount of $141,428—included 42 Protech Assault VP Shield Level III W/Viewport ballistic shields, which was made through GT Distributors, according to city documents. The shields will be distributed to all school resource officers and patrol officers.

The Leander Police Department was awarded a Bullet-Resistant Shield grant for $143,500 through the Office of the Governor, according to city documents. The city completed the application for the grant in January 2022 and received the award in January.

Council also approved the purchase of a multisensor digital security camera system for the police department, which costs $55,625. This purchase was approved under the city’s current operating budget, according to city documents.

The new security camera system will replace the end-of-life surveillance camera equipment that is currently in the police department building, according to the city. Some of the equipment dates back to 2007. This new camera system is expected to help guarantee accountability of any incidents that may happen in public and holding areas throughout the city’s police department.
