Residents looking to make the most of the final weeks of summer can find a variety of events in Bellaire, Meyerland and West University. Here's a look at six happenings taking place in August and early September. This list is not comprehensive, and details are subject to change.
Party on the Patio
West University Place will host a concert at the Colonial Park West end as part of the Party on the Patio summer series. Rescheduled from June, Mary Jane: A Tom Petty Experience will now take place in August.
Houston Shakespeare Festival
Presented by the University of Houston, this annual festival returns to Miller Outdoor Theatre this year with William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” The play follows an all-powerful sorceress who conjures a great storm to wash a ship of her enemies ashore.
The Midweek Make: Sand Art
At TMC Helix Park, guests can demonstrate their creative expression through sand art with Junrui Garcia. Students will explore different ways of manipulating sand as media to create artwork, then transfer it to another medium. The session is available for all ages.
Author Talk: Shern-Min Chow
Emmy Award-winning journalist Shern-Min Chow will discuss her novel “If Not You...” with visitors to the Asia Society Texas Center. The book talk will also feature a signing. A copy of the book is included with the ticket.

Cardboard Boat Regatta
Bellaire residents will gather in August for the city’s annual cardboard boat regatta, which involves a race with boats and/or paddles made entirely from cardboard and duct tape. Anyone can participate, with awards given for first place based on age range, as well as best costume and boat design.
Rosh Hashanah Honey Cake Workshop
Celebrate the sweetness of the Jewish New Year with Chef Yotam Dolev by learning techniques behind creating a rich, flavorful Rosh Hashanah honey cake from scratch.
