Officials with the Astrodome Conservancy released a formal request for information document Aug. 18 seeking advice from developers, investors and operators on the most creative and financially viable ideas to redevelop the iconic Houston landmark known as the Astrodome.
What is it
A request for information (RFI) is a formal business or legal document used to gather general facts, market research, or additional information about features of a product or service from suppliers, according to The University of Texas System. The practice is most often used in construction when sufficient information is not available to develop a project's detailed scope of work.
“This RFI is an opportunity for the market to help shape a shared vision for the Astrodome,” said Beth Wiedower Jackson, executive director of the Astrodome Conservancy. “We are looking to gather creative, feasible and financially viable ideas that reflect both the significance of the Astrodome and its potential as a catalyst for future development.”
According to the Aug. 18 news release, Astrodome Conservancy officials are specifically seeking input from developers, investors, operators and other stakeholders with experience in large-scale, mixed-use and adaptive reuse projects.
How it works
Interested participants are encouraged by Conservancy officials to submit responses outlining potential concepts, partnership structures, financing approaches or implementation strategies through the submission portal available here. The deadline for responses is Sept. 8.
Taking a step back
In 2024, the Astrodome Conservancy revealed plans for a $1 billion redevelopment concept of the dome called Vision: Astrodome. The plans included renovating four buildings inside the arena with a new space for events and entertainment. Prior coverage also noted that the redevelopment would be surrounded by restaurants, retail and office spaces, as well as commercial-use spaces.
Back then, Chairman Phoebe Tudor said that the dome's status as a Texas historical landmark could leverage private investment funding and minimize public investment. However, in late 2025, Harris County officials released an updated study indicating a basic operational renovation of the dome would cost roughly $752 million and emphasized that any revival must rely on private funding.
From the date of that announcement, Conservancy officials have been trying to advance a public private partnership model for the dome, seeking advice from county leaders, stakeholders and developers, with the release of the RFI as the latest step in the project.
