League City to host blood drive amid regional shortages following snow storm

League City will host its monthly blood drive Feb. 11 at Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center with officials hoping to surpass last year’s blood donations amid regional shortages.

In partnership with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, League City will host a blood drive at Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center, 400 W. Walker St., League City, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., according to a news flash from the city.

In 2024, League City through its drives donated 267 units of blood to the center, which officials said can save more than 800 lives. This year, the city has set a goal to surpass last year’s numbers and donate enough blood to save 1,000 lives.

At January’s blood drive, League City collected 37 units of blood from donors, including six first-time donors. The city hopes to have 30 blood donors for February’s drive, communications director Sarah Osbourne said.

Community Impact recently reported that the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center experienced a shortage in blood donations after canceling several blood drives due to Winter Storm Enzo.

The center needs 1,000 blood donations a day to sustain the blood supply for community hospitals. Officials in the past have said each donation can save up to three lives.
