Q&A: Meet the candidates running for League City Mayor

Why are you running for this position?

When the Grand Parkway is complete League City will undergo its last major growth cycle. My roots run deep in League City, and I have the public service, financial and development experience necessary to help my hometown plan for growth while protecting what is great about League City.

What would your top priorities be if elected?

Affordability: 40% tax reduction since I joined council. Highest homestead exemption in Texas; Public safety: 24% increase in police spending, additional EMS assets, support Volunteer Fire Department; Stellar city services. Great parks, library programs and community events. Development pays its own way. No taxpayer support.

What do you see as the greatest challenge for the city, and how will you improve it?

Preparing for and responding to growth. League City is past the point of growing just for growth’s sake. We have created policies that shift the cost of development from the taxpayers to developers. This policy has helped us stay ahead of growth, reduce taxes and weed out low-quality development.

What should League City’s budget priorities be?

Affordability: since joining council I have reduced the property tax rate by over 40%. Public safety: League City has been named one of the safest cities in Texas. Infrastructure: As Mayor, we’ve invested $500 million in infrastructure. More investment in drainage, roads and water projects.

Why are you running for this position?

I’m running because I think people deserve a government that listens, asks questions, and remembers who it works for. On Council, I’ve tried to be independent and look at each issue on its own. As Mayor, I want to keep doing that and make City Hall work better for residents.

What would your top priorities be if elected?

My priorities are pretty simple: public safety, roads and infrastructure, and getting people where they need to go. I also want City Hall to be easier to deal with. We should take care of the basics first, spend carefully, and stop making simple things harder than they need to be.

What do you see as the greatest challenge for the city, and how will you improve it?

League City is growing, and we have to make sure our roads, drainage, public safety and other services keep up. We also need to do a better job maintaining what we already have. I would rather solve problems early than wait until they become expensive emergencies.

What should League City’s budget priorities be?

League City’s budget should take care of the basics first: police, fire and EMS, streets, drainage and maintaining what we already own. After that, we can look at wants. I want us to spend carefully, plan ahead, and make sure residents can see where their money is going.
