San Jacinto College received a $400,000 grant from the Greater Houston Community Foundation, or GHCF, to expand opportunities for eligible high school seniors through access to tuition-free college, according to a March 27 news release from the college.
The details
The funding will support the college’s Promise Scholarship endowment, which allows graduating seniors living within the San Jacinto taxing district to attend college with all in-district tuition and book costs covered.
School districts in the college’s district include:
- Channelview ISD
- Deer Park ISD
- Galena Park ISD
- La Porte ISD
- Pasadena ISD
- Sheldon ISD
- Portions of Pearland and Clear Creek ISDs
Since launching in 2021, the scholarship has supported more than 11,600 students and provided $10.3 million in tuition support, according to the news release.
Why now?
The news release noted that the Greater Houston metro has the highest youth disconnection rate among major U.S. metro areas, with 13.3% of young adults ages 16-24 who are neither enrolled in school nor employed, translating to around 124,500 people, according to the 2025 youth disconnection report from Measure of America.
“This is a visionary investment from the Greater Houston Community Foundation which will open doors for countless students who thought college was out of reach,” San Jacinto College Chancellor Brenda Hellyer said in the news release.
