The initial four programs were chosen based on employer demands, alignment with SHSU's current programs and the university's ability to launch them quickly, Hargrave said. While specifics are still in review, more programs are in development, including offerings in trade, business and health care sectors.

The college has an open admissions policy that Hargrave said is central to its mission. The college is meant to serve first-generation college students, career changers and others who might not pursue a bachelor’s degree right away.

To ensure students are job-ready, SHSU developed SamPoly’s curriculum with input from companies in the industry like Forward Edge-AI and Anthem Technology, Hargave said. The goal was to match classroom skills with real-world needs and reduce onboarding time for employers.

“If a company hires a graduate from SamPoly, we want them to know that person is prepared to deliver on day one,” Hargrave said.

How we got here

SHSU announced SamPoly in February, making it the school's ninth college. But planning began in fall 2024 in response to workforce shortages and technological changes, Hargrave said.

“There are a lot of parallels between now and post-World War II when this legislation was created,” Hargrave said, referring to a 1947 law authorizing SHSU to offer technical credentials. “We saw economic disruptions, labor shortages and technological changes. This was the right time to act.”

Hargrave added that students enrolled in SamPoly have full access to campus services, student life and support offered to all SHSU students.

“If you’re a SamPoly student, you’re a Bearkat,” he said. “Our goal is to cultivate lifelong learners.”
