Motorists along Tahitian Drive should see construction-related delays end sooner than expected as Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative’s power line upgrade enters its final phase.
The gist
Work began May 26 and covers Tahitian Drive between Kaanapali Lane and Riverside Drive.
Originally planned to finish Aug. 7, the project is now expected to be completed by the end of July.
Will Holford, manager of public affairs for Bluebonnet, said it is intended to increase electricity capacity as demand continues to grow in the area.
What crews are doing
Crews are strengthening the existing infrastructure and replacing some utility poles with taller ones to support larger electric wires. Holford compared the upgrade to replacing a small water hose with a larger one that is capable of carrying more water.
New pole installation was completed in June, and crews began installing the new wire in July.

The work is being completed in phases to minimize outages and service interruptions.
What drivers should know
Holford told Community Impact the narrow, hilly roads require temporary single-lane closures in active construction zones.
Traffic will continue to move through the area, but drivers should allow additional travel time and use caution around crews.
Planned outages may also be necessary, he added.
What’s next
The project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
Until then, lane closures are expected to continue from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
