A proposed resolution to support designating FM 969 in Bastrop as the “Charlie Kirk Corridor” was tabled during a Bastrop County Commissioners Court meeting on Feb. 23.
The details
Although Precinct 4 Commissioner David Glass proposed the resolution, he requested the item be tabled after fielding several emails from constituents.
The motion to table the item passed unanimously, and Glass added that he does not plan to put the item back on a future agenda.
Some background
Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated Sept. 10 during a public speaking event at Utah Valley University.
Zooming in
The Bastrop County Commissioners Court held a 30-minute session for citizen comments, where those in favor and against the proposed resolution took turns speaking.
Bastrop County resident Ruth Todd was among those against the proposed resolution.
“Charlie Kirk was one of the most polarizing figures in American public life,” she said during the meeting. “He built a career on dividing people. Honoring him with a permanent place on our county map does not unite this community.”
Mark Wyatt, another Bastrop County resident, spoke in favor of the proposed resolution.
“Charlie Kirk was an American patriot and Christian who encouraged informed civic and cultural engagement, particularly with young students on campuses across the nation,” he said. “A resolution is an important step that will encourage the Legislature to appropriately honor Charlie Kirk and his mission that continues to impact the lives of many in Bastrop County, in Texas and across the nation.”
Notable quote
“I would like the Bastrop County Historical Commission to weigh in on any resolutions that we send to the Legislature with regard to memorial highway designations,” Precinct 2 Commissioner Clara Beckett said. “There’s a lot of deserving people.”
