Bastrop ISD STAAR scores notch another year of gains

Bastrop ISD students posted slight gains on math and reading state assessments in 2026, according to Texas Education Agency data released June 16.

The results follow improvement seen across several STAAR testing areas in 2025, as previously reported by Community Impact.

The overview

Across math, reading and social studies, the district’s average share of students who scored at Approaches Grade Level or above on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, increased 2.1 percentage points in 2026.

The agency considers Approaches Grade Level to be a passing score.

Math saw the largest subject-level increase, rising 7.8 percentage points year over year. Reading also increased, improving 1.5 percentage points, while eighth-grade social studies declined 3 percentage points.

The biggest grade-level gains came in seventh- and eighth-grade reading, which increased 13 and 11 percentage points, respectively. Reading scores in grades 3-5, however, declined.

Evan Moilan, Bastrop ISD executive director for communications, told Community Impact that district officials are already reviewing the results and plan to meet June 22 for further analysis.

"The district will use the results to refine instructional plans for the 2026-27 school year," Moilan said.

Something to note

The June 16 results show current STAAR performance rates for grades 3-8; however, the TEA’s reporting process includes data verification before final administration report data is published.

The June 16 results offer an early look at student performance, while final administration reports are used in the state’s accountability reporting process, according to TEA reporting documents.

Final STAAR data for grades 3-8 is expected to be available publicly in the Family Portal on July 31.

Science results for grades 5 and 8 are also expected to be released July 31. Results are delayed because updated curriculum standards changed the content on the tests. Standard-setting is underway to ensure the updated content does not make the tests easier or harder, according to a news release from the TEA.
