Stay in the know with the five most-read Bastrop-Cedar Creek stories in June, including three data center projects, a planned Whataburger rebuild, a late-July Texas Roadhouse opening, H-E-B's Bastrop expansion ribbon-cutting ceremony and a possible full-service hospital.
1. Town halls set for 3 Cedar Creek data centers spanning nearly 1,500 acres
Three EdgeConneX data center campus projects are in various stages of development and review, including:
- Campus No. 1 is underway at 6682 FM 535, Cedar Creek, and includes about 112 acres, about $440 million in capital improvements and one two-story building totaling about 578,000 square feet. As previously reported by Community Impact, the county approved a tax abatement agreement for that campus in December 2024, and completion is expected this summer.
- Campus No. 2 includes properties at 6682 FM 535 and 6402 FM 535 in Cedar Creek, according to Bastrop County Appraisal District records. It includes 951 acres and about $1.4 billion in capital improvements. Schroeder said two buildings are currently proposed, with seven additional buildings anticipated in future phases.
- Campus No. 3 could house nine data center buildings on 400 acres at 6543 FM 535 in Cedar Creek, and an adjacent lot, according to county records. Schroeder said the project remains in the preliminary stages. Requests from EdgeConneX so far relate to excavation and grading activities, she added, noting that no permit applications have been submitted for the data center buildings themselves.
2. $2.5M Bastrop Whataburger planned at current site
Whataburger officials filed construction plans June 25 for a $2.5 million project, including a new 3,800-square-foot fast-food restaurant with sit-in dining and drive-thru service. It is not yet clear whether the restaurant will be closed during construction, as officials had still not responded to requests for more information by publication.
3. Bastrop's Texas Roadhouse sets late July opening
Texas Roadhouse will soon welcome diners at Bastrop's 75-acre mixed-use development called Sendero. Managing partner Abel Fragoso told Community Impact the steakhouse is on track for a late July opening.
4. Bastrop's H-E-B Plus debuts 2-year, $30M renovation
The now-140,000-square-foot store underwent a series of changes, including expanded and remodeled departments throughout the store.
5. Closer to care: Bastrop explores path to full-service hospital
For years, Bastrop residents have left the area for specialty and inpatient care. Now, city leaders are studying whether a full-service, acute care hospital could work closer to home.
In April, Bastrop City Council advanced a second round of analysis after reviewing a feasibility study by health care consulting firm Pershing Yoakley & Associates. The study examined demographics, inpatient demand, patient migration and market conditions across a 37-ZIP-code service area—or about a 30-minute drive—surrounding Bastrop.
Among its findings: facilities in Bastrop are “insufficient,” and the region is short about 523 hospital beds—forcing 97% of residents to leave for inpatient, specialty and acute care.
