As of March 9, the final day to file for candidacy, four seats on Leander City Council are being contested for the May 9 general election.

Candidate Dan Michie will compete for the mayors seat with Mayor Chris Fielder, who was first elected mayor in 2012.

Other incumbent council members and challengers are in races for places 2, 3 and 6.

Michelle Stephenson, vice chairwoman of the Leander Planning and Zoning Commission, is running for the Place 2 seat held by Councilwoman Kirsten Lynch.

Two candidates, Shanan Shepherd and Jerry Perez, are running for the Place 3 seat. Former Councilman Simon Garcia vacated the seat Jan. 29.

For the Place 6 seat, Councilman David Siebold will compete with candidate Troy Hill, a nine-year Leander resident and member of the citys economic development committee.

A previous candidate for the Place 6 position, Shooter Russell, was required to drop out of the race after city staff reviewed the law that requires council members to be at least age 21. Russell is 19 years old.

Hill said he chose to run for the Place 6 seat because of his view on City Council term limits.

Council members serve three-year terms without term limits.

Two other council candidates are running unopposed for their seats and will begin their terms before the electionincumbent Place 4 Councilman Ron Abruzzese and Place 5 candidate Jeff Seiler, a commissioner on the Leander Planning and Zoning Commission. Place 5 is being vacated by Councilman Jason Dishongh in April, leaving the term unexpired with one year left.

Place 1, held by Councilwoman Andrea Navarrette, is the only seat not open in the election. Her term expires in May 2016.
