Drivers on Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Leander can travel 5 mph faster after Leander City Council on Jan. 29 raised the highway’s speed limit from 60 mph to 65 mph.

City Engineer Wayne Watts said the Leander Engineering Department recommended the change after staffers conducted a study of accidents and speeds on Ronald Reagan. Staffers will install new speed limit signs near Leander’s north and south city limits, Watts said.

Watts also said the department will post advisory signs for drivers to travel at lower speeds near three hills on north Ronald Reagan. The signs will recommend a speed of 55 mph at the hills, which Watts said do not meet the department’s sight distance requirements for a higher speed limit.

Watts said engineering staffers will continue to monitor traffic conditions and speeds on Ronald Reagan, especially as new subdivisions open along the developing corridor.
