Owner Michael Parker said he will now focus his attention on the business' flagship location, Opal Divine's Marina, located in Northwest Austin at Parmer Lane and MoPac Expressway. "We are not going away," Parker said. "We are excited to be able to be more malleable, to be able to change menus quicker, explore new concepts, new menu items, new drinks and new tasting formats. Since we only have to focus on one [location], we can be a little quicker to respond to requests." Known for its extensive whisky and craft beer offerings, the local restaurant's Penn Field eatery is the larger of the two Austin locations, which contributed to its "high rent and expense load," Parker said. "The expenses of the location have increased pretty astronomically in the past three years, due to Austin property taxes going up, and also because we are on our third landlord since we’ve been there," he said. "It just wasn't working." Parker also attributed the shuttering to a cultural shift in South Austin, noting that the "Keep Austin Weird" fascination has been replaced by a desire to discover the latest and greatest bar or restaurant concept. "The focus of Austin seems to be new; where is the new patio, new brunch place, new cocktail bar," he said. Parker thanked customers and staff who have frequented the Southwest Austin location over the years, and encouraged customers to visit the Penn Field location between now and its closing for deep discounts on drinks, especially during the week following Christmas.Opal Divine's Penn Field closing December 31st https://t.co/SFfWxk2CYH pic.twitter.com/mWLWoy6qJF
