Here are 5 things to know this week, Nov. 21-27, if you live in Southwest Austin.
1. Work began Nov. 8 to build
SH 45 SW, a $109 million, 3.6-mile toll road that will connect Loop 1 with FM 1626 in Hays County. Decades of planning have lead to this project, which is expected to alleviate traffic and address housing affordability in the Southwest Austin area. Although the project won’t be complete until late 2019, once the road is open, estimates show it will save area drivers $12.4 million in its opening year—based on reduced travel times per vehicle and associated cost— and will reduce the total vehicle hours traveled in the region by 18 percent.
2.
Southern Careers Institute will open a new location today in the Southwood Shopping Center at 1701 W. Ben White Blvd, Austin. SCI will offer technician and welding programs and tech boot camps, such as Full-Stack JavaScript.
3. The
Hyatt Regency Austin at 208 Barton Springs Road, Austin, will host a Thanksgiving brunch Thursday from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.. The meal features a variety of dining options, ranging from traditional Thanksgiving dishes—such as herb-roasted turkey, candied sweet potato casserole, and sage and cornbread stuffing—to less conventional holiday options, such as king crab, prime rib and sushi. The cost is $32.50 for children ages 4-12, and $65 for adults. Children ages 3 and under eat for free. Check out this
guide for more information on events happening around Austin over Thanksgiving weekend.
4.
Small Business Saturday calls upon the community to skip Black Friday and support small businesses by shopping locally Saturday, Nov. 26. For ideas on where to shop for gifts in Southwest Austin, check out this
2016 Holiday Gift Guide.
5. All
Austin ISD schools and facilities will be closed from today until Friday, Nov. 25 for Thanksgiving break. Classes will resume on Monday, Nov. 28.
