This Saturday the Austin ISD Police Department is encouraging area residents to drop off expired and unwanted prescription drugs for proper disposal. Members of the community can bring items to Austin High School, located at 1715 W. Cesar Chavez St., and drop off items in the west parking lot from 10 a.m-2 p.m. Saturday.
  1. Labels on containers of expired or unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medications should be blacked out or have identifying information removed, according to an AISD news release.
  2. Inhalers, syrups, vitamins, ointments, lotions, over-the-counter medications and medication samples will be accepted.
  3. The school district will not accept some items, including needles, syringes, IV bags, used bandages, aerosol cans and chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide.
The city of Georgetown is also inviting residents to participate in a prescription drug take-back day Saturday. Collecting unused and expired medications prevents them from being flushed, poured down the drain or put in the trash, which keeps medications from ending up in rivers, lakes and ground water, according to a city news release.
Removing unwanted medications can also reduce the risks of accidental ingestion by children and visitors.
