Sunset Valley Village shopping center welcomed its newest tenant, MAD Greens, on May 25. The restaurant specializes in gourmet, made-to-order salads, fresh juices, wraps, paninis, sandwiches and soups. The Sunset Valley location is the fifth in Austin.
- SoCo Park owners bring amenities to St. Elmo District
A revitalized development in the St. Elmo District will provide amenities to the South Congress Avenue neighboring developments, its owners said. SoCo Park, at 4930 S. Congress Ave., will be made up of retail and restaurant tenants, identities for which will be revealed in the near future.
- Austin mayor perceives special legislative session as an attack on city governance
Following news that Texas Gov. Greg Abbot will call for a special legislative session to begin on July 18, Austin Mayor Steve Adler expressed disbelief at the 19 items picked for the session, which include the bathroom bill, school finance reform, mail ballot fraud and other proposed new laws that would scale back the power of local governments.
- Texting and driving ban to take effect this fall
A statewide law banning texting and driving was signed last week by Gov. Gregg Abbot. The law, which will make the act punishable by a monetary fine, is scheduled to go into effect across Texas on Sept. 1.
- Austin residents can now check the status of speed mitigation requests
Following a May 19 update of the Austin Transportation Department's list of requests for speed-reducing tools, such as speed humps or cushions, residents can now check the status of their requests through the city's website. Requests are prioritized on several factors, including the number of vehicles traveling at or above the speed limit, the evidence of support from other property owners, and more.

Following the resignation of former trustee Paul Saldaña in late April, the Austin ISD board of trustees voted to fill the District 6 vacancy by appointment rather than calling for a special election. Three candidates have filed to be considered for the vacant seat: Alejandro Delgado, Geronimo Rodriguez and Glen Shield. At Monday night's special board meeting and work session, the trustees will select which applicant will serve until the next general election in November 2018.
