On Jan. 22, Austin ISD trustees voted to approve the instructional calendar for school year 2018-19.

Based on a vote from parents, students, staff and guardians on three proposed calendars, the overwhelming response was in favor of Calendar A, district staff said, which possessed the following aspects:

  • 176 student instructional days (one less than the 2017-18 calendar);

  • first day of class for students: Aug. 20, 2018 (one day earlier than 2017);

  • last day of class for students: May 24, 2019 (before Memorial Day; the final day of school in 2018 is May 30);

  • 187 teacher duty days;

  • 22 traditional holidays for students and staff;

  • eight teacher staff-development dates; and

  • 11 work days for teachers without students.

The calendar also includes two bad weather days, staff development/planning days, a minimum of 75,600 instructional minutes and two parent conference days at the elementary level.

The changes to the calendar were approved 8-0. Trustee Ann Teich was not present for the vote.
