Since electric scooters arrived in downtown Austin in April, the city has implemented a permitting process; developed rules, partnered with companies to collect data on user behavior, solicited feedback from residents and launched a pilot program to determine how to integrate dockless mobility on trails and parkland.

The Austin Transportation Department continues to assess the ideal number and distribution of permits, Assistant Director of Smart Mobility Jason JonMichael said, calling dockless mobility “the biggest change to the transportation landscape in over 70 years.” ATD will present a responsible riding ordinance to City Council in March.
