Southwest Austin neighborhoods and LifeAustin Church this month have requested another postponement of the potential city of Austin Board of Adjustment decision on LifeAustin Church’s controversial amphitheater on West Hwy. 71.

For years, the LifeAustin Amphitheatre has been the subject of controversy, primarily because of the amplified sound emanating from its worship services held on the site. Some residents gave testimony to the BOA in 2015 that the amphitheater should be allowed to continue to operate, while others think noise from its worship concerts is a nuisance. Members of the neighborhood groups and the church have been meeting since late 2015 to try to determine a mutually acceptable agreement before going back to the BOA.

The BOA discussion, which was originally set for February and then delayed a few times, is set for Oct. 10. A joint request from a representative of the Hill Country Estates and the Covered Bridge Property Owners Association—the neighborhood groups that sued the city over its approval of the amphitheater’s construction—was received Sept. 9, according to city of Austin spokesperson Sylvia Arzola.

LifeAustin and the leaders from Covered Bridge and Hill Country Estates homeowners associations agreed to enter mediation talks after meeting throughout the year, according to John Capezzuti, business and legacy pastor for LifeAustin.

“Those talks were productive,” he said in an email. “We have now negotiated a draft agreement, and are working to reach a finalized settlement agreement in the next couple of weeks. Until those agreements are finalized, the negotiated terms cannot be disclosed, but we will be happy to provide additional details once the settlement is completed.”
