A new private middle school option is coming to Southwest Austin in 2017, joining several other private and charter schools that are looking to serve families in the area by launching new school models and physical locations.

Online registration opens Thursday for Synergy Middle School, scheduled to open in fall 2017.

The new school will serve 24 sixth-grade students, said Executive Director Rachel Soto, who helped establish the educational nonprofit Kairos Ed. Children enrolled at Synergy, a full-time, private middle school, will take classes at the school's "home base" at local business The Art Garage, located at 11190 Circle Drive, for two days per week and then spend the other three days visiting other sites, including Earth Native Wilderness School, Yogapeutics, The Paramount Theatre, and Don't Stop Rockin' for programming. The school's goal is to use academics in the classroom and experiences on-location to create a "whole-child" learning experience while incorporating the Kairos teaching approach, she said.

"In Southwest Austin the need is for more options and more holistic options. The way that the Kairos approach pays attention to teachers, parents and students as a triad of beneficiaries is really unique," she said.

The first round of admissions decisions will happen in early February, Soto said.
