The new sidewalk on Mercer Street and Hwy. 290 opened for public use Sept. 15.

The details

The Mercer Street sidewalk project extends from the intersection of North Rob Shelton Boulevard and Hwy. 290, continues along Hwy. 290 through downtown Dripping Springs, and ends at the south intersection of Mercer Street and RR 12.

The city has also installed a raised crosswalk on Mercer Street and two pedestrian crossing beacons to help pedestrians navigate the area more safely. Temporary barricades have been put in place until custom handrails are installed next month.

How we got here

The sidewalk project is part of the city’s plan to create a safe and walkable community. Since 2016, the city has partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation to fund a series of sidewalk projects.

“Sidewalks may seem like simple projects, but they have a huge impact on safety, accessibility and the overall quality of life in our community,” said Ginger Faught, Dripping Springs deputy city administrator, in a news release.

Looking ahead

The next TxDOT-assisted project is scheduled for 2026. The Old Fitzhugh Sidewalk Project will extend along Old Fitzhugh Road, connecting Mercer Street to RR 12.
