After over a year, Trautwein Road—on Hwy. 290 headed toward Dripping Springs—reopened to traffic Aug. 5, and the detour at Hwy. 290 and Canyonwood Drive has been removed.

In a nutshell

The road project, a partnership between Hays County and the Texas Department of Transportation, sought to increase visibility and safety, according to a news release from the county.

Improvements included:
  • Lowering Trautwein Road at Hwy. 290 to improve visibility
  • Adding a dedicated right-turn lane from westbound Hwy. 290 to Trautwein Road
  • Adding retaining walls to Trautwein Road
  • Improving the intersection signal on Hwy. 290
“The intersection has had numerous safety concerns and major accidents for years,” Hays County Commissioner Walt Smith said in a statement. “I’m proud that by proactively partnering with TxDOT, we delivered this project on budget and on time while improving safety for all our residents.”

The $1.5 million project was funded partially through the 2016 voter-approved road bond program, with the remaining dollars paid for by TxDOT mobility grants.
