The Austin Transportation Department has selected sections of four neighborhood roads in South Austin for its second round of closures to promote pedestrian activities across the city.

Parts of Marsh Drive, Leo Street, Seminary Ridge Drive, and Whispering Oaks Drive between Slaughter Lane and William Cannon Drive will be closed to vehicular through traffic as part of the Healthy Streets Initiative.

The Healthy Streets program was authorized by Austin City Council on May 7 with the goal to “open street space for walking, running, biking, and other activities that promote physical and mental health” during the ongoing pandemic, according to the city.

Roads will continue to be open to local residential traffic, deliveries and emergency vehicles, but temporary traffic control devices will be installed by the transportation department to limit through traffic, according to a news release from Austin Transportation Department. Social distancing is encouraged for those using the roads for activity.

The initial round of closures included five areas across the city of Austin and were put in place earlier this summer.
