On June 5, the Central Texas Food Bank held an event celebrating a partnership with Central Health and Sendero Health that plans to keep children fed throughout the summer.

What happened?: Central Health is the health care district for Travis County. It offers Medical Access Programs for uninsured patients and provides care for the Austin area in both the Northeast and Southeast regions. Central Texas Food Bank offers free meals to lower-income families as well as help applying for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. It covers several counties, including Bastrop, Falls, Limestone, Williamson, Travis and Hayes counties.

The food bank offers its services from 60 different locations around Texas, and now Central Health Southeast Health and Wellness Center has become one of those sites. It will provide free breakfast, lunch and snacks this summer for free to children 18 years old and younger from June 5 through Aug. 11.

Why it matters: “Summer is a difficult time for Central Texans. One in seven struggles to put food on the table, and during the summer that number goes higher for kids,” said Sari Vatske, the Central Texas Food Bank president and CEO. “The goal is to serve 5,000 meals a day. That’s 260,000 meals this summer.”

During the summer, the cost of electricity and other bills tend to get higher as well. Vatske also explained that without the availability of low cost or free meals at school, some families can find themselves without food. The website centraltexasfoodbank.org has a map to find food anywhere in the state, offering hot meals and groceries.
