The Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark will open July 27 after years of work bringing the park to fruition.

What’s happening?

The grand opening will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Beginning at 10 a.m. there will be competitions and contests open to all ages, with prizes for skating tricks and performances.

At noon July 27, the park will officially be open to the public everyday from sunrise to sundown.

The backstory

Construction on the skatepark broke ground in February at the north end of Founders Memorial Park, 419B Founders Park Road, Dripping Springs.

The Dorian Zev Kweller Memorial Skatepark was named in honor of a Dripping Springs High School student who died in February 2023. Kweller was the son of local musician Ben Kweller, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony Feb. 10 with other family members.

The idea for the skate park began in 2014, and Dripping Springs City Council first approved plans for the park in 2017.

The total construction cost is about $800,000, funded by the city, community fundraising and the 2020 Hays County parks bond. The city also contributed an additional $75,000 for amenities, such as trash cans, sidewalks and benches.

The park will be about 10,000 square feet, and the city provided 1.5 acres of land for the park.
