The Knight Law Firm will represent the city of Sunset Valley after city council approved the firm as its legal counsel May 5.

The Knight Law Firm was one of two firms brought to city council for consideration after a successful request for qualifications was issued in January. They were selected over the law firm of Denton, Navarro, Rocha, Bernal, Hyde & Zech.

Scanlan, Buckle & Young, an Austin-based firm that has served as the city’s legal counsel since 1982, did not submit an application into the RFP process and therefore was not considered. The city’s contract with the firm is set to expire during the current 2019-20 fiscal year.

While the city had not gone out for an RFQ in recent years for legal services, new rules passed by city council in 2019 require Sunset Valley to go out for bids on contracts anticipated to be for more than $10,000.

According to city documents, legal services provided by The Knight Law Firm will include reviewing and drafting agreements and contracts for the city; reviewing city council meeting agendas and supporting documents; and providing counsel to elected officials, city board members and city staff. The firm could also be responsible for special projects assigned by city council and would represent the city in future litigation.

The Knight Law Firm is based in North Austin.
