The drive-thru will open at 9 a.m. and will guarantee service to the first 300 pets that are leashed or in carriers. Owners can also preregister their pets online.
Microchips are electronic chips that are inserted under the skin of a pet and serve as a form of identification that can be scanned for owner information, according to Austin Animal Center, the municipal animal shelter for the city of Austin.
“Microchips not only are essential to helping pets reunite with their families but are also lifesaving,” said Rebekha Montie, Austin Animal Center field services manager, in a press release. “A pet has a much greater chance of making it back home if they are microchipped.”
Free rabies vaccines will be provided by Austin Animal Center. Petco Love, a nonprofit organization focused on animal welfare, will distribute DAPv Canine and HCP Feline vaccines.
“By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these life saving vaccines, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease,” Petco Love President Susanne Kogut said.
The event marks Austin Animal Center’s largest drive-thru clinic and first off-site.
