The search is on for the next Austin Community College chancellor.

This follows an announcement made by Chancellor Richard Rhodes that his retirement will take place in August. According to a press release issued by the college, Rhodes is the longest-running chancellor in ACC's 50-year history. Rhodes began his tenure as president and CEO of ACC in September 2011.

"Dr. Rhodes has cultivated a culture of innovation, collaboration and transformation to put the college at the forefront of the future of higher education," said Sydney Pruitt, ACC senior media relations coordinator. "The college will begin a nationwide search for his successor immediately."

In an interview with Community Impact, Pruitt said the board of trustees is "working swiftly," and by the end of next week, a website dedicated to the search will be live. Details on whether a search firm will be hired have not yet been released, Pruitt said.

Rhodes has been touted by colleagues for his leadership during his time at ACC.

“It’s clear—Dr. Rhodes’ contributions to this college and community are immeasurable. It’s difficult to find someone who cares more about students than Richard," said Dr. Barbara Mink, ACC board of trustees chair, in a press release. "His passion for innovation and collaboration has truly been transformative. Through his leadership, ACC has grown into one of the leading colleges in the nation—recognized for its progress in closing equity gaps, increasing completion rates, establishing advanced learning environments and more. We are grateful for his leadership, his dedication and his service to this college. He will be missed.”

Rhodes told the board of his plans to retire Jan. 17, and the announcement was made to the public Jan. 18.

“It has been the greatest pleasure to serve as chancellor of Austin Community College,” Rhodes said Jan. 18 in a press release. “Coming to ACC and serving this community are among my top personal achievements.”
