Austin ISD officials announced there is a freeze on the ability to transfer to five schools within the district for the 2023-24 school year.

The district will no longer accept transfers from potential students who are outside the attendance areas for the next school year. The freeze applies to five schools, including Barton Hills Elementary, Gullet Elementary, Marshall Middle School, Lamar Middle School and McCallum High School. However, Barton Hills will not be frozen at kindergarten, and Gullett will not be frozen at Pre-K or kindergarten, district officials announced on the AISD website Dec. 21.

Transfers for students within the attendance area will open on Jan. 9, 2023.

Those families who are transferring within the district can do so by visiting the online portal and filling out the Online Student Transfer Request application. Those who will be new to the district will also need to visit the online portal and complete the online registration before they can submit the transfer request. Documents needed to complete the request include a parent or guardian's photo ID, proof of address and a birth certificate for students who are new to the district.

District officials said those families outside the attendance area who would like to enroll in the district—excluding the frozen schools—can submit a request beginning Feb. 1, 2023. Keep in mind, however, out-of-district transfers are not allowed for magnet or special programs. These schools include the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, Kealing Middle School, Lamar Middle School, Lively Middle School, the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, and McCallum High School—regardless of whether the school is frozen or not.
